AFRICAN BLACK SOAP with Shea Butter

(4 customer reviews)

African Black Soap for Face and other skin conditions like acne and itchy skin. In Ghana they use it for itchy skin patches. I purchase this directly from Africa, put a little more shea butter to make it more gentle, a little Activated Charcoal for gentle exfoliation and cleansing, some Frankincense for smell and exfoliation, Orange Peel for scent and exfoliation and aloe juice to provide extra conditioning. This soap is traditionally soft because of the natural lye they make themselves. make their own lye using ash.

AFRICAN BLACK SOAP WITH SHEA BUTTER

I am so pleased to bring you this soap since my mission is to make products that use tradition, nature, age-old knowledge passed from mother to daughter and apply these in new ways to offer solutions aimed at simplifying our complex lives.

When I put this soap together I imagined it might be especially appealing for people who struggle with body acne or rough skin and those who really like a soap that lathers very well and makes their skin squeaky clean.

I suspected men might like it a lot and also that people with eczema might want to try it to see if it helps.

I didn’t imagine I would like it as much as I do and I use it every morning in the bathtub. My favorite things about this soap are:
? The earthy grounding smell
? The amount of soapy lather I get
? That it is in a jar so I don?t waste any.
? The way I can work it into a sponge and the sponge remains soapy for my whole bath.
? Shaving my legs with it (although for that it would have been better if I?d left out the exfoliation)
.
True African Black Soap crumbles apart and contains a variety of soap textures from soft to hard, has a mottled appearance throughout, colored very light beige to dark brown. Bits of black charcoal are dotted throughout. I love the earthy look, feel and smell of a block of raw African Black Soap but find it a bit difficult to use without just a bit of tweaking on my part. So, I put it in a big pot with some orange blossom water and warm it at a very low temperature for at least a day, adding orange blossom water as needed. When it has melted all together, I add activated charcoal, frankincense and orange peel powder and keep warm until I’m satisfied with the consistency. I then place in jars.

I put this soap in jars because I find raw or re-milled African Black soap is too soft to last very long as a bar. There’s a reason for this. Natural African Black Soap is soft because it is made with handmade caustic potash making it a much softer soap than the more frequently used lye in modern soap bars.

My additions are meant to boost the natural power of the African Black Soap. As I mentioned earlier, raw Black soap naturally contains bits of charcoal which I believe is one of the reasons it is such a great soap for skin conditions like eczema, psoriasis, idiopathic dermatitis and acne. We’re not completely sure why activated charcoal works except that it attracts impurities and binds them to itself through adsorption. To make sure every part of the African Black soap used contains a healthful amount of charcoal, I add the Activated Charcoal which comes as a very fine dust-like powder so the charcoal is in every bit of soap. People swear by topical use of activated charcoal to help them with skin conditions so it is a natural addition to the soap, plus it creates a lovely texture and color.

Now I am having a love affair with a certain tree gum, Frankincense. I never thought I liked the smell, probably because what I was actually thought was the smell was some fake frankincense-like scent.t Now I know I do love the smell of true frankincense. It makes me feel like everything is going to be very very okay.

I use the actual Frankincense powder rather than essential oil because I think it might contain more benefits for the skin including Boswellic acid.

You can feel how well this soap cleans. One of my clients uses it to shave his face.

I use it every morning in the bath and I love the way it provides a very thick lather. It seems to last a long time too, probably because I put it into a jar (and sell it that way too).

This soap is rich because it is made from Shea butter. The addition of Frankincense and Myrrh is used as a traditional way to fight aging and dry skin.

This soap is hand made in Ghana, West Africa. When I purchase it, it arrives as a softish mottled block, with gray splotches. It has a wonderful smell that I find calming and reassuring.

All soaps require a form of lye but African Black Soap relies on the oldest form of lye called potash, which is handmade from the ashes of plantain skins, cocoa pods or Shea tree bark depending what is available when the soap is made. This why the soap is softer .

Normally made from a secret recipe passed down from mother to daughter, black African soap is traditionally used for troubled skin, especially acne, eczema, rashes and other skin conditions.

I met a hospice nurse originally from Ghana the other day at the Leucadia Farmer?s Market. She told me she made it as a girl and her family would use extra on rashes.

It works but I can’t get used to the smell. I haven’t been able to use it more than a couple of times because of this.
