Hair smoothing and beautifying herbal hair detangler with marshmallow & fenugreek as well as comfrey, kelp, lemon peel and licorice. It does smell a little of Apple Cider Vinegar, which is great to smooth hair cuticles down, but the smell of this fades leaving the scent of vanilla, orange and maple which my husband really seems to like.

I haven’t had a haircut in a long time. I wouldn’t admit this but I know many of us are in the same boat. My hair is longer than it has ever been before (I think partially because I’ve only been using my own products and they they do help my hair grow). This new long hair of mine gets really tangled though. It’s sort of fine with a bit of curl. I had to come up with a solution and I wanted it to be natural as possible but also work! So it’s a hybrid of natural solutions with a few very effective detanglers. I don’t include silicones because I figure if you want those you can add them in a separate product (like the one I’m working on right now).

Helps with Brushing

Anyway, after a bit of tossing and turning at night, I was waking up with matted hair which was hard to comb out. As you know, brushing out tangles in hair can break the hair and shorten it or damage it, so it’s best to keep it untangled.

My herbal hair detangler with marshmallow & fenugreek seems to be really helping. I wash my hair with my Yucca and Oat Protein Shampoo Bar, Swipe it with my Conditioning Bar and then spray on my detangler.

I am good for about three days. You can spray on a little more in between shampoos but you might find you need to also wet a brush to add just a bit more water.

About the Detangler

This is a silicone free detangler using the power of herbs for anti-static power and to smooth hair cuticles. It comes in a sturdy, heavy duty trigger sprayer that conveniently turns on and off for travel. We’ll probably add an option to purchase a refill to save on plastic, if you don’t see one listed contact me and we’ll see if we can make one up for you.

I start making the herbal hair detangler with Marshmallow & Fenugreek by infusing the herbs including comfrey, kelp, lemon peel and licorice.

Description of Ingredients

Marshmallow Root is the go-to natural hair detangler because of its high level of mucilage, which adds slip and slide to your hair. Not only that but according to a paper on the Therapeutic effects of marshmallow:

This herb contains peptides, starch, monosaccharides, disaccharides, mucilage, flavonoids, anti-oxidants, coumarins, scopoletin, tannin, asparagines and many amino acids. The extracts obtained from the roots and flowers of marshmallow have antibacterial (both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria), antifungal, anti-inflammatory, anti-mycobacterial and anti-cough properties as well as antiviral, anti-yeast, anti-complement and free radicals scavenging activities.

The slipperiness of marshmallow root helps you comb away tangles and knots. It also leaves hair feeling soft and has protein to help strengthen hair.

Fenugreek benefits to hair was recently featured in Cosmetics and Toiletries Magazine where is was lauded for smoothing cuticles, strengthening hair shaft, improving shine. It also contains hydrating components and Vitamin B. This of course should come as no surprise to anyone familiar with the Ayurvedic practise of a Methi hair mask of fenugreek seeds. Fenugreek smells and tastes a little like maple syrup.

Comfrey (Symphytum officinale) has often been used for scalp health and will ease irritation, helping hair grow.  It also has a hefty amount of natural mucilage, which is why I chose it for this detangler.

Kelp is another detangler due to its natural slipperiness. It helps hair in other ways as well, said to strengthen and condition.

Lemon Peel adds to shine of hair by flattening the cuticle and eliminating frizz.

Licorice Root is a powerful demulcent, meaning it forms a protective barrier because of it’s natural emollients.  Not only does it smooth hair  and helps with tangles but it is actively being researched as a hair growth aid.

Apple Cider Vinegar works similarly to lemon peel by smoothing hair cuticles, lower hair’s Ph to a healthy level and help preserve the blend so I can use less preservative.

Rice Protein conditions and heals hair cuticles by filling little gaps and  damage of your hair follicles and adding strength to your hair.

Cetrimonium Chloride is a very efficient way to keep static down in hair and help detangle.

Peg-40 Castor Oil helps keep the blend together once you shake it and conditions as well.

Propanediol 1,3 is a humectant, conditioning and smoothing hair.

Sodium Lactate and Glycerin are moisturizers that keeps frizz down and hair smooth and slippery.

Honeyquat is a hair conditioner.

Phenoxyethanol (and) Caprylyl Glycol and Potassium Sorbate are preservatives without formaldehyde or parabens

I’m not sure how I feel about the smell of this stuff. It’s definitely a different kind of smell. Not terrible though. It really works detangling my hair though and the scent fades after a bit.
