Understanding Isopropyl Myristate Benefits for Skincare

Isopropyl-Myristate

You may pause at the name – I did too. It sounds more like something from a lab than a skincare ingredient. But Isopropyl Myristate is simply what forms when isopropyl alcohol and myristic acid (a fatty acid found in coconut oil, palm kernel oil, and nutmeg) combine.

Because it includes the word alcohol, I wondered at first if it might be drying or harsh. But once those two ingredients react, the alcohol part is gone. They become a new, gentle molecule called an ester, light, silky, and non-drying. It’s a bit like how lye, once it meets oil, becomes soap: what starts as strong becomes completely transformed.

In my experience, IPM helps oils behave beautifully. It encourages them to glide smoothly and spread evenly, so they can seal in moisture and protect the skin barrier without leaving that heavy, slick layer.

It’s also what makes my Body Oil different from my Massage Oil. Massage oil is meant to stay on top of the skin, lots of glide for hands and pressure work. Body oil, though, should sink in. With IPM, nourishing oils like borage and jojoba can reach every tiny hill and valley of your skin, leaving it soft, even, and comfortable.

In short: IPM helps transform rich, natural oils into something light, fast-absorbing, and skin-loving, no thickeners, preservatives, or emulsifiers needed.
