Insanely Itchy Butt Hole at Night

I’d never heard of Anal Itching (pruritus ani) until, one night, I couldn’t go to sleep because my anus was itchy and wouldn’t stop. I was being driven crazy by anal itching.

Intense chronic itchiness of the area around the butt hole – Anal Itching (pruritus ani) – is not a subject we often discuss but apparently 1 to 5% of the population suffers from it. And, like my expereince was, it often becomes a real problem at night and impacts sleep.

The cause of an itching anal area is most often unknown although infrequently it is caused by a specific disorder.

The skin around the anus is thin and sensitive so it makes sense that it would react to allergens and sensitivities from inside and out. Tracking down the cause might take some time and awareness – and may not be conclusive.

I personally suspect the following for my infrequent bouts of anal itching

  • Overloaded with too many allergens in my environment
  • Diarrhea caused by magnesium
  • Sensitivity to tomatoes (I get it when visiting Ontario during tomato season – as I LOVE fresh tomatoes)
  • Stress

Tricks to Ease Anal Itching

  • After your shower, treat the skin around your butt hole with a Zinc cream to protect the skin. I make a cream I use called Naked Chafe Not. The Zinc Oxide cream stays in play and basically keeps skin protected and keeps any fecal matter that might be present throughout the day from irritating your skin.
  • After taking a poop and wiping your butt clean, dap a little unscented Aloe Gel on some clean toilet paper and do a final wipe to make sure your butt hole is as clean as possible.
  • Purchase a Sitz Bath tub, which is basically a plastic tub to put your butt in. It helps keep you clean and soothes inflammation. Or consider installing a bidet right into your toilet. This can be life-changing for people who are older or have physical conditions that make hygiene more challenging.
  • If you wake up in the middle of the night with an insanely itchy butt hole, try placing a small icepack or ice-cold cloth between your butt cheeks.
