Description
Arizona Chaparral Soap
Also known as Creosote or Greasewood
The scent of desert rain, in a bar of soap.
Inspired by the Sonoran Desert. If you’ve ever walked through the desert just after a rainstorm, you know the scent: earthy, green, and completely unforgettable. That signature smell comes from the chaparral plant, also known as creosote bush. It’s the heart of this Arizona Chaparral Soap.
Instead of using essential oil, which distorts the natural scent, I take a gentler approach. I infuse fractionated coconut oil with fresh chaparral leaves and resin, then grind the leaves directly into the soap. When you lather it up, the smell rises just like it does when rain hits dry desert ground.
(If you love this scent, be sure to check out my Chaparral Roll-on, too.)
A Plant With Ancient Power
Used in traditional Native medicine, chaparral is considered a sacred healing plant. The Tohono O’odham Nation tells of it being the first to grow from Earth Maker’s hand, symbolizing life and resilience. In the Mojave Desert, a chaparral plant ring known as King Clone is estimated to be over 11,000 years old, making it one of the oldest living organisms on Earth.
Science is just catching up: chaparral contains NDGA (nordihydroguaiaretic acid), a powerful antioxidant with potential antiviral and anti-inflammatory properties.
Why “Chaparral” Instead of “Creosote”?
While the plant is often called creosote bush, “creosote” can also refer to a toxic coal-tar preservative, definitely not something you’ll find here. So I chose Chaparral for clarity and beauty. This soap is 100% natural, made with clean ingredients, and nothing synthetic.
Ingredients
Saponified Oils of Olive Oil, Coconut Oil, Sustainable Organic Palm Oil, Castor Oil, Unrefined Beeswax, Chaparral Leaf Infused Oil, Ground Chaparral Leaf.
Why These Ingredients Work So Well
Olive Oil = Creamy, Gentle Lather
Olive oil is deeply conditioning and gentle on the skin. It gives Arizona Chaparral Soap its signature soft, nourishing feel.
Coconut Oil = Bubbles + Clean
Too much coconut oil can be drying, but I use just the right amount to create big, bubbly lather while keeping your skin balanced and soft.
The Truth About Palm Oil
Palm oil is often misunderstood. I only use certified sustainable and organic palm oil, sourced from RSPO members.
Why? Because palm is actually one of the most land-efficient oils out there. Replacing it with alternatives often increases deforestation. That’s why I support ethical palm oil – not elimination.
Castor Oil Adds the Magic Touch to my Arizona Chaparral Soap
Even in small amounts, castor oil boosts lather, draws in moisture, and makes the bar feel richer. It’s one of those “secret sauce” ingredients that elevates every bar.
Beeswax for Hardness and Texture
Beeswax helps this bar last longer and adds a luxurious, creamy glide. I source it from local beekeepers who care for their hives because quality matters.
Naturally Scented With Real Chaparral
This soap contains no added fragrance, just real, wild-harvested chaparral. The scent is subtle but powerful: think warm desert air, fresh rain, and sun-baked earth. When the soap hits water, the leaves release their aroma. It’s as close as you can get to standing in the desert after a monsoon.
I prefer to let nature speak for itself. At least half of my soaps are scented only with pure essential oils or infused botanicals, never synthetic fragrance when I can avoid it.

Smells lovely. Hefty, long-lasting bar. While it doesn’t lather particularly well, I am perfectly clean out of the shower. I’m starting to understand that some natural products clean great without loads of suds. Non-drying! No residue and a bit scrubby. Excellent ingredients.

Haven’t used it yet, but smells amazing. Creosote is my favorite smell to remind me of rain in the desert, so I think this soap is going to become a staple of mine.

Growing up in New Mexico and Arizona, this soap brought me back to the monsoons of my childhood. Smells beautiful and I love that it is mildly exfoliating as well. I also appreciated the free deodorant sample. Thank you!

I like this soap but my partner doesn’t so much like the smell. It’s definitely musky and earthy!
